The HTML Overlay uses the Flash windowless mode. There are few bugs in windowless mode and because the HTML Overlay component uses it I will mention them here so you know ahead of time before starting any projects.
- Drag and drop works intermittently in Netscape 7.2 browsers when using windowless mode.
- The text input and text area components bundled with Flash MX 2004 Professional do not show a blinking cursor when using windowless mode in Netscape 7.2 browsers.
- Selecting text in a div that is placed over a Flash object, such as in the HTML Overlay component, is not always very easily selectable in Mozilla browsers. Not very common but you should be aware.
- Placing HTML in a text field in Flash to use in your HTML Overlay is a shortcut I use in some of my examples. But Flash will interprit some HTML including href tags causing undesired results. If you use this technique verify your HTML works in the browser.
- Mouse wheel support is inconsistent in Mozilla browsers.
- Multiselection does not work in list components in Mozilla browsers.
These are not the fault of the HTML Overlay component. They are issues with the specific browsers and their support of wmode for the Flash Player plugin. Most can be easily worked around by reloading the page with wmode turned off. Macromedia is aware of these issues but if you would like to submit them as bugs to the wish list it will help in getting them fixed in the next version of the Flash Player. In spite of all these things the HTML Overlay component is a really great component and works well IMHO.
